Monocle 24 App

Objective

Monocle is a global affairs and lifestyle magazine, founded by Tyler Brule in 2007. The magazine is sold across the world, covering culture, international affairs, design, fashion, politics, travel and business.

In 2011, Monocle Magazine, launched Monocle 24 a new Internet based radio station that broadcast shows 24 hours a day. To coincide with the launch, Monocle wanted to create an app that would serve as a portal to listen to the radio show and access some other unique features, designed for mobile.

Following funding for the app from Rolex, Monocle chose to work with Mubaloo to create Monocle 24.

Solution

Monocle wanted to create a portal through mobile that would enable listeners to enjoy Monocle 24 directly from their mobile phone. Web analytics revealed that iOS was the main mobile OS visiting Monocle’s website and downloading its weekly podcast. It was therefore decided to create an iOS only app.

Monocle wanted users to be able to listen to Monocle 24 through the app, in addition to creating playlists through a built-in TimeShift browser, sponsored by Rolex. In addition to accessing the radio content, the Monocle app was designed to offer a mobile version of Monocle’s 25/25 destination guides and a weather button on the home screen.

The designs for the app were done by Monocle’s in-house design production team, with support from Mubaloo, whilst the development work was handled by Mubaloo. Given Monocle’s global audience, it was important that the app worked around the world, with local features. To do this, the app was designed to offer content that would appear across various time zones at the right time of day.

Results

To ensure that the app attracted the right audience, who wanted to listen to Monocle 24, the app launched at £4.99 and hit 5,000 downloads in the first month. The app became the number one paid-for news app on the Apple App Store in its first month and remained in the top 10 for much of 2011.

Between 2011 and 2013, Mubaloo continued to make interim updates to the app on behalf of Monocle to ensure it worked with new versions of iOS.

In September 2014, Monocle replaced the app with a new free version focused solely on accessing the radio show.
