The Challenge

Liverpool University currently have a web based drug interaction website for physicians and patients to access as they wish. Previously there was a Windows mobile PDA version which had been developed to download and access this information but the technology had become outdated and required the user to check for new data every time the app was used. Liverpool University decided it was time to update and make this information available to users of the latest smartphone devices.

Our Solution

Taking the previous Windows PDA version Mubaloo’s design team went about designing a new UI to make the information easy to access and in an inviting way. The result is a very straightforward and easy to use app. The challenge of keeping data up to date with the latest interactions was implemented by doing an automatic check each time the app is launched to see if new data is available, giving the user the option to download at a more convenient time. Also a rollback mechanism was implemented to ensure that if the data did not download completely (e.g. out of signal coverage) then the previous data was restored to make sure that data is not mixed between updates.

Conclusion

The resulting app has been a resounding success being named “A small medical miracle” on The Independent news website. Using this app patients can actually be better informed than their physicians in some cases as to what they can take in addition to their current HIV medication. Already there have been requests for different languages and platforms to spread this information using hand held devices across the globe bringing this vital information to patient’s bed sides.
