The future’s bright. The future’s mobile?

Last week Mubaloo Chairman, Mark Mason, and Planning Director, Gemma Ravensdale, spoke at the Financial Services Forum event entitled: “The Future’s Bright. The Future’s Mobile?” The agenda for the morning’s forum included talks from Tom Wykes-Sneyd from Google, then Mark and Gemma from Mubaloo, followed by Mike Reignier from Lloyds Banking Group.

Last week Mubaloo Chairman, Mark Mason, and Planning Director, Gemma Ravensdale, spoke at the Financial Services Forum event entitled: “The Future’s Bright. The Future’s Mobile?” The agenda for the morning’s forum included talks from Tom Wykes-Sneyd from Google, then Mark and Gemma from Mubaloo, followed by Mike Reignier from Lloyds Banking Group.

Tom Wykes-Sneyd from Google, looked at the importance of mobile within banking and the impact this can have, revealing that “Banks with mobile capture twice their normal share of customers switching banks” and the fact that there are 1 million mobile banking customers in the UK right now. According to Tom, “Financial searches on mobile through Google are up from 4% to 12% year on year.” He also introduced the forthcoming “Google Wallet” currently being trialled with Citibank in the USA, but revealed there is currently no UK launch date for the service.

Mark and Gemma looked at mobile apps within Financial Services and the impact this is having both in B2C and B2B. Gemma presented Mubaloo’s 5 top tips for a great Financial Services app, and contrasted the approaches to developing time saving functional apps with time killing immersive apps.

Mike Reginier, head of current accounts at Lloyds Banking Group, discussed Lloyds ongoing commitment to mobile banking as a key channel, from SMS services to their up and coming smartphone apps.

Mike also started the NFC debate by showing Lloyds commitment to the technology stating that Lloyds is committed to making mobile contactless payments happen in the UK, and that London 2012 will be a showcase for UK mobile technology with Lloyds and Visa rolling out mobile contactless infrastructure at games venues and throughout London. He also revealed that Lloyds will enable contactless big ticket purchases through secure Mobile NFC soon.

But perhaps the biggest area up for debate was around who will actually own the space – Mobile operators, handset platforms or banks? What do you think?
