Across an organisation mobile app deployment can be fragmented with different line of business units utilising different developers, or internal resource, to create apps. This can make the ongoing support and maintenance difficult if apps are configured in different ways.

In order to simplify and scale the deployment of enterprise apps, five technology companies banded together to launch App Configuration for Enterprise (ACE) at MWC this year. The consortium, made up of AirWatch by VMware, Box, Cisco, Workday and Xamarin have created an open standard approach to help with the deployment and support of apps.

ACE provides standardised app configurations and policies that work easily with a company’s EMM solutions. The idea behind ACE was to target security and usability concerns that businesses have when deploying enterprise apps to their employees.

The standard is designed to help companies by:

  • Automating the first-time setup experience with app configuration capabilities
  • Securing app connectivity to corporate networks with per-app tunnel
  • Avoiding separate user login requirements for each app with single sign-on
  • Allowing access to native apps only on secure, compliant devices with access control
  • Preventing data leakage with a flexible set of security policies including open in and copy/paste controls, wiping corporate data remotely from lost or stolen devices

ACE is designed as a cross platform solution for iOS and Android, by leveraging the latest APIs from the platforms that developers and EMM platforms use, to easily integrate into new and existing apps.

The idea is to help developers and companies who are building apps to reduce the cost and time it takes to build enterprise ready apps. For developers the benefits of ACE include no proprietary SDK or app wrapping, vendor neutral applications, a single app build for enterprises and no coding required for certain security settings.

As an enterprise developer, we regularly work to help organisations who have fragmented mobile apps across their organisation. The introduction of ACE appears to help towards what Mubaloo has been working to achieve. It is a solution that we are actively investigating and exploring to help standardise enterprise apps.
