Today, in front of a packed room, Mark Daniels, Head of IT for MTR Crossrail delivered a presentation where he demonstrated how MTR Crossrail will transform the rail industry through technology innovation – in partnership with Mubaloo Innovation Lab.

Crossrail will provide inter-urban and metro passenger services connecting London City, Canary Wharf, the West End and Heathrow Airport to commuter areas east and west of London.

Crossrail will serve all 40 stations along the Elizabeth Line, with a peak timetable frequency of 24 trains per hour.

Crossrail will provide a fast, frequent service linking the east and west and relieving congestion on some of the busiest Tube lines. Passengers using the Elizabeth Line  will see reduced journey times and the new stations will be integrated with existing London Underground, DLR, London Overground and National Rail stations. This will make it easy for passengers to change between services, increasing rail based transport in the capital by 10%.

All of this will require a huge deployment of IT infrastructure. As a brand new, under-and-overground rail network, MTR Crossrail requires technology innovation to deliver a highly efficient service. As Mark discussed, key to winning the bid for Crossrail was how innovation was going to deliver a better service for passengers.

A core part of MTR’s rollout for Crossrail includes the deployment of beacons across all of its stations and trains, covering assets, platforms and employees. This will help to make the service more efficient and be a core part of disrupting the transport industry through innovation.

As Mark described, the story is unique as it will see beacons and mobile technology at the centre of operations for the hundreds of staff on MTR Crossrail. This will also then benefit the millions of passengers who will travel on MTR Crossrail, by delivering a more efficient service with enhanced operational intelligence.

MTR Crossrail seeks to provide operational excellence and the highest possible level of customer service for London. MTR Crossrail will deliver train and passenger services including:

  • Excellence in customer service through 40 Crossrail stations
  • Providing approximately 700 timetabled services per day
  • A peak timetable frequency of 24 trains per hour
  • An estimated 200 million annual passengers will use Crossrail
  • Totalling an estimated 11.4 million train service km per year
  • MTR Crossrail expects to employ up to 850 new people, creating jobs for local people. This will include almost 400 drivers and over 50 apprenticeships.

The aspiration is that MTR Crossrail will set the benchmark for passenger experience on European metro services and achieve internationally recognised high standards of safety, reliability, quality and customer service.
