Over the weekend, our chairman, Mark Mason, burnt 18,370 calories, across 268 miles and two countries. Doing this, as part of Team Bristol Media, Mark helped to raise £100,000 for Above & Beyond, a charity in Bristol raising funds for projects that make a difference to patient care in the area. The proceeds of the race will go towards a new Cystic Fibrosis Room at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

How do we know how many calories Mark burned? As you can see from Mark’s photo below, he was carrying light – so light that he didn’t have his phone on him. Instead, he had his Apple Watch Sport, tracking his heartbeat and calorie count over the 268 miles and four days. Despite not being connected to a phone, the Watch was able to accurately track and assess the amount of calories being burnt, along with tracking the amount of time Mark took.

Departing from Bristol on Friday, the team went on the following route:

Friday – Bristol to Salisbury (4,731 calories)
Saturday – Salisbury to Portsmouth (4,539 calories)
Sunday – Caen to Evreux (4,793 calories)
Monday – Evreux to Paris (4,317 calories)

Joining Mark on the Bristol Media team were Chris Thurling, a leading digital strategy, innovation and marketing advisor, Jonnie Galvin-Wright, a Director of Bristol Media, MD of Stuff Advertising, Ben Heald, CEO of Sift and Christian Tait, Creative Director of Creative Cadence.

“The past four days have probably been some of the most challenging of my life.” said Mark from France, “It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever attempted to do. It was worth it though. Along with my teammates, we’ve hit our target of £100,000 which will be used to fund an isolation room for young Cystic Fibrosis patients at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.”
