Plume Labs have been using IoT to solve London’s pollution problem by strapping location-based technology sensors to the backs of pigeons to detect ozone, nitrogen dioxide and other harmful compounds wherever they fly in the city.

Real-time data on pollution levels will become available through this innovative project. With Mubaloo Innovation Lab’s work with smart sensors and IoT, Internet of Business approached Mubaloo for comment.

The Mubaloo Innovation Lab works with big enterprises on IoT solutions, particularly with smart sensors and one of they areas The Lab is working on proof of technologies for is detecting pollutants in working environments. So Mubaloo’ s London MD, Sarah Weller, shared her thoughts on the project and the potential for using IoT to tackle pollution:

“The Internet of Things helps to provide remote or local context to the state of assets and environment and to deliver intelligence. There is huge potential for IoT and sensors to help gather information on pollution to inform solutions to help reduce pollution in the air and water, soil.

External sensors can be placed in the relevant environments to detect levels of certain pollutants, like CO2 levels or levels of toxic chemicals, for example. Driven by IoT this information can be fed into backend systems and the data can be used to evaluate pollutions levels and drive action. Contextual IoT is about connecting things to drive intelligence and the ability to remotely manage, diagnose and react to what is happening in real-time.”
