We’re very pleased to announce that the Met Office app has won Best App of 2012 at The SPARKies this year! The awards celebrate the best of the south west’s digital and tech sector and are part of a long list of events at Bath Digital Festival.
The Best App of 2012 category was one of the most competitive with ‘an overwhelming amount of entries’, according to the Bath Digital Festival blog. The Met Office app was up against MyTalky, a social voicemail app that allows users to send messages via Twitter, and Clockwork Racers, a Grand Prix gaming app developed by Opposable Games. Award judges included digital specialists from EE, Aardman and Dyson.
Mubaloo CEO Mark Mason was joined by the Met Office’s Head of Applications Richard Carne at the event, as well as the some of the Mubaloo team who worked on the app – Project Manager James Tipler, iOS developer Tom Guy and Android developer Andy Barber.
The Met Office iPhone and Android app has seen huge amounts of success over 2012 and 2013, with over 5,000,000 downloads in just over a year since its launch. The app now accounts for over half of the Met Office’s overall web traffic, highlighting the shift we seeing from desktop to mobile.
As of this week there is a new update available for the Met Office iPhone and Android app, which includes new social sharing integration and an updated Android widget, as well as optimisation for iOS 6 and iPhone 5.
We’d like to say a huge congratulations to everyone who was shortlisted and won awards! It’s great to see the south west having such an impact in the digital industry both locally and nationally.
