PROMPT Maternity
Pre-hospital App

The PROMPT Maternity Foundation (PMF) is a multi-professional group of obstetricians, midwives and anaesthetists based in the UK. The aim of the charity is to improve birth outcomes for mothers and their babies through effective training for emergencies during labour and birth right across the world.

Although paramedics, ambulance staff and other pre-hospital healthcare professionals have a wide range of medical knowledge and skills to help them provide the best care, for labour and childbirth problems, it can be much more difficult for them to develop these skills therefore there is a real desire for better training and information.

PMF run maternity emergency training updates for paramedics and ambulance staff who want to improve their skills in this specialist area. In order to provide additional support in maternity emergency situations, PMF wanted to create an additional learning resource, based on national guidance, to help support them in providing the best emergency maternity care.

PMF worked with Mubaloo to develop a mobile app for the iPad that can be used to support paramedics and ambulance staff when faced with obstetric emergencies whilst out in the field. The Prompt Pre-hospital App provides helpful information in the easiest and quickest possible way.

The app will also compliment PMF’s existing Pre-hospital training packages, by providing attendees with an interactive learning tool for further engagement in the learning process.

Mubaloo and PMF developed the PROMPT Pre-hospital App to help provide pre-hospital staff with vital information when they need it most. To ensure that the information can be accessed anywhere; all guidance materials (algorithms, videos and information) are hard coded in the app, meaning that no network or Wi-Fi connection is necessary to access the materials.

Developed natively, this app provides the most intuitive and user-friendly experience. The app is segmented into three categories (Pre-Birth, Birth and Post-Birth) to ensure that the end user accesses the correct information.

With colour coding, the user can easily identify the most relevant area of care. Once a category has been selected, five of the most common complications are presented. A short description of each complication can be accessed and once the correct problem has been identified, the app user can select a full range of information to provide optimal care for mother and baby.

To provide paramedics and other pre-hospital staff with extra support to communicate with maternity professionals, the app also includes information on the common terminology used in pregnancy and childbirth.

End users and PROMPT midwifery and medical staff were involved during the design stage of the app, to help identify and refine the user journey, and user testing was also conducted to establish the best user experience outcome.

The PROMPT Pre-hospital App will provide vital support for paramedics, ambulance staff and other pre-hospital healthcare professionals, to help them provide optimal evidence-based emergency maternity care in the community. With a clear and well thought out user journey, end users can access the relevant information they need as quickly as possible.

PROMPT pre hospital app

It has been a pleasure to work with the team at Mubaloo to produce our PROMPT Pre-hospital App. As our first App project, we have really appreciated the guidance and support given by the Mubaloo design and development team. They have fully incorporated our ideas and designs, and have produced an App that is both easy to use and informative. We truly hope that it will be a great help to paramedics and other pre-hospital staff in the UK and abroad. This is our first experience at 'dipping our toe in the App water’ and it has enthused us to consider other App projects. We would definitely be keen to work with the Mubaloo team again in the future.
