We’re thrilled that the Met Office iPhone and Android app has now reached over 5 million downloads in just under a year since its launch!
Clearly the wintry weather we’ve had over the past few weeks has led to even more people wanting to access the very latest weather information from their mobile devices! From the 13th-20th January, the iPhone & Android app saw over 400,000 downloads! In the same week the app was accessed nearly 25m times – this equates to 41 times PER SECOND! This just shows how much demand there is for localised weather information while users are on the move and also how mobile devices are changing consumer behaviours.
During this week the app also reached 4th position in the top free apps category in Google Play and 7th for the same category in the App Store. Although it has always ranked well, sitting in the top 10 for both Android & iOS platforms is a fantastic achievement!
The Met Office app gives users up-to-date weather forecasts and warnings for over 5,000 locations across the UK and received its first major update
last November. Based on months of user feedback, the app now presents a lot more information on the front screen, including wind speed, UV levels and sunrise and sunset times. The app was also brought more closely in line with the Met Office’s website, introducing new icon-based weather warnings and new weather graphics.
The Met office has been a huge success since its launch just under a year ago. The Independent voted the app number 1 in their June 2012 feature ‘The 10 Best Weather Apps
’ and it was also shortlisted in the Best Consumer App
category at last year’s Appsters.
